Monday, Feb. 20 marks Presidents’ Day, a day known for celebrating of both George Washington’s and Abraham Lincoln’s combined Birthdays. Presidents’ Day was created in 1971, when President Richard Nixon combined the birthdays of two of our most well-known presidents into one single federal holiday. Presidents’ Day also marks a hard-earned day off from work and school for a lot of our patients at Dr. William Schmidt’s office.
Here are a few fun facts about our nation’s presidents:
*Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, carried letters, bills and notes in his tall stovepipe hat.
*George Washington is the first president to be featured on a postage stamp.
*Ronald Reagan, our 40th president, broke the so-called “20-year curse,” in which every president elected in a year ending in zero died in office.
*Abraham Lincoln was the tallest of the U.S. presidents, measuring 6’ 4” tall.
*Virginia is the birthplace of more United States presidents than any other state, followed by Ohio and Massachusetts.
*Harry S. Truman was the first president to have his Inauguration and speeches televised.

With February being National Children’s Dental Health Month, our team at Dr. William Schmidt’s office thought we’d share a few good oral hygiene tips with our patients, courtesy of the American Dental Association, or ADA.
• Teeth brushing techniques: It takes only two minutes to properly brush, using short, gentle strokes and devoting extra attention to the gumline, areas around fillings and hard-to-reach areas such as the back teeth.
• Flossing: hold the floss snugly between thumbs and index finger and place between each of the teeth, making sure to go beneath the gumline and curving the floss around the base of each tooth.
• Snack wisely: choose healthy snacks such as vegetables, fruits and cheese and avoid sticky, chewy candies that can stick to the teeth. If you eat these snacks, make sure to brush after doing so.
• Carbonated or sugary drinks: these beverages create acids that can damage the teeth when mixed with saliva, so they should be avoided altogether. When drinking one of these beverages, avoid sipping on it throughout the day. Rather, have a drink and then brush your teeth.
• Regular dental visits: You should visit us regularly (approximately every six months).
National Children’s Dental Health Month, now in its 62nd year, aims to increase awareness about the importance of kids’ oral health. If you have any questions about keeping your mouth healthy, or about your treatment with Dr. Schmidt’s office, please feel free to give us a call!

I’m Dr. William F. Schmidt, and I would like to share with you a letter of appreciation that I received from a patient that I recently treated. Over the last 30 years I have had the pleasure of working with many people from all walks of life. It is letters like the following that have made me realize how fortunate I am to have chosen a profession that has allowed me to make positive changes in the lives of my patients.
“My name is Valerie, and this is my story. Back in 1987, I was involved in a severe car accident. Besides multiple leg fractures, my teeth were damaged severely. I was resigned to the fact that I would have to live with my damaged teeth for the rest of my life. After having multiple teeth extractions over the years, I realized I had to finally do something. My cheeks were sunken in, and I had problems chewing. I felt humiliated.
Recently I saw a magazine in the grocery store listing Seattle’s top dentists. I found an article about Dr. William F. Schmidt. My life was to change at that moment.
From the time my husband and I walked into their office and were greeted warmly by the staff, I knew I had done the right thing. Any fears and concerns I had simply disappeared for good. Using the term “like night and day”, that’s the results I received there.
Under Dr. Schmidt’s care, I went from being embarrassed to smile, to proudly smiling from ear to ear at every opportunity. I was given the confidence once again after having decades of low self esteem and avoiding having my picture taken.
My own mother broke down in tears when she saw my new teeth. She knew how unhappy I had been, and she was thrilled at how beautiful and natural they look. My husband and friends are thrilled, also! I feel so blessed that I was given the opportunity to meet Dr. Schmidt and the warm, friendly staff that he has there.
I would absolutely recommend to anyone that has similar problems and fears that I had, to pay them a visit as soon as possible. They will change their life, also. I can’t thank them enough. They really did make all my dreams come true.”
It is so rewarding for me and my dental team when patients are able to enjoy a quality of life they thought would never be possible for them.

One of the first questions we receive from patients at Dr. William Schmidt’s office is why they have been referred to us. Usually a prosthodontist is recommended when the type of dental care you need is outside the scope of your general dentist’s expertise.
Prosthodontists provide an extremely high level of care to patients with missing teeth, or those who have significant damage to their existing teeth. Prosthodontists also work with patients with congenital defects as well as problems arising from trauma and neglect. While many of our patients are through referrals from general dentists and specialists in the Seattle area, you can also call us to schedule an appointment without a referral if you feel our services could benefit you. We look forward to hearing from you!
